Theory is essential. Experience is proof

Recently I made a LinkedIn post where I referred to a quote attributed to the 18th century German philosopher Immanuel Kant:

“Experience without theory is blind, but theory without experience is mere intellectual play.”

Based on the number of engineering friends and colleagues who responded with a thumbs-up, heart, or supportive reaction, it clearly struck a chord. But why?

I think it’s because Kant’s quote gets to the heart of what it means to be an engineer.

We need a solid grounding in theory to make good decisions. Whether that comes from science, mathematics, design principles or established practice, theory helps us understand the likely consequences of our actions. Without it, we run the risk of delivering inefficient, unreliable, or even unsafe outcomes.

But the reverse is also true.

Engineering isn’t about accumulating knowledge for its own sake. At some point, ideas need to be tested in the real world. No matter how elegant a solution appears on paper, it is only through application and experience that we discover what works, what doesn’t, and what needs to change.

That’s probably why the quote still resonates more than 200 years later. Engineering has always been about balancing theory and practice. One informs the other, and neither is particularly useful in isolation.

It also feels relevant to a broader challenge in modern society. We seem increasingly capable of discussing possibilities, risks and alternatives at great length, while sometimes struggling to move from conversation to action. Consultation and analysis are important, but there is a fine line between due diligence and analysis paralysis.

As engineers, we’re often at our best when we help bridge that gap. We take what we know, apply it, learn from the result, and improve it next time.

So, was Kant right?

Probably.

But as engineers, should we spend more time contemplating the question?

In the immortal words of modern internet philosophy:

“Ain’t nobody got time for that.”
