Reflection by Professor Lihong Zheng | School of Computing, Mathematics and Engineering | Data Science and Engineering Research Unit
On Wednesday, 9 July, the SoCME hosted a whole-of-School research forum – a day of strategy, insight, and collaboration.

We explored the School’s refreshed strategic plan, heard from HoS Prof. Anna Shillabeer and ADR Prf. Zahid Islam on research impact in action, and were introduced to our established research themes of the Data Science and Engineering Research Unit (DSERU) by each group lead.
It was great honour to hear inspiring talks from our distinguished guest speakers:
- Dr Praveen Gauravaram from Tata Consultancy Services
- Mr Angus McNicol from AutogenAI
- Mr Nihar Madkaiker, Co-founder of iXR Labs
- Professor Cameron Clark, Deputy Director of the Gulbali Institute
- Professor Andrew Hall, CSU Program Lead of the One Basin CRC
- Professor Kerryn Butler-Henderson, Head of the School of Nursing, Paramedicine and Healthcare Sciences
- Associate Professor Samantha Jakimowicz and Dr Salma Arabi from the School of Nursing, Paramedicine and Healthcare Sciences
The talks and demonstrations were both engaging and thought-provoking, adding substantial value to our event. Academics from the School found the forum both inspiring and informative, sparking meaningful discussions. We had productive brainstorming sessions on research priorities, industry collaboration, opportunities, communication, engagement, and impact. We look forward to future opportunities for collaboration and continued connection.
