Students, community members and engineering cadets and professionals came together at the annual EngFest 2024 at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst from Monday 3 to Wednesday 5 June.
Professor Tim Anderson, Director of Charles Sturt Engineering in the School of Computing, Mathematics and Engineering said EngFest is Charles Sturt’s annual celebration of engineering.
“EngFest hosts exhibitions and presentations of student works and research, school visits and information sessions, a careers expo, industry networking, professional development events and more. It brings together students, cadet and professional engineers, researchers, representatives of Engineers Australia, and interested members of the public”
Professor Anderson said Australia continues to face ongoing shortages of engineers and it is vitally important that school students in particular grasp the opportunity to join the varied and dynamic profession that is engineering.
“Engineering is not about mathematics and science, it’s about people and their aspirations for a better life: for themselves, their family, and their friends. But most people don’t really know what engineers do. As a society it’s important that we acknowledge that engineering is a professional discipline with many roles and career paths, and is far more than just building smoother roads, faster cars, and smarter electronics,” he said.
On Schools Day Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 June over 70 high school students from Coonamble High School, Denison College Bathurst High, Portland Central School, Skillset Senior College and James Sheahan Catholic High School attended a full day of educational workshops at which students will engage in exciting hands-on activities with engineering concepts that replicate real-world projects.
On Wednesday 5 June senior high school and mature age students interested in studying engineering at Charles Sturt joined a presentation on what it’s like to study Engineering at Charles Sturt and attended a Careers Expo hosted by CSU Engineering.
