Mahir Habib, a distinguished PhD candidate from the School of Computing, Mathematics, and Engineering at Charles Sturt University (CSU), is set to make a notable impact as a finalist in the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. This prestigious event will be held in Port Macquarie on August 8th, and Mahir is honoured to be the sole representative of his school.

Mahir’s PhD research focuses on “Microservice Architecture for Livestock Data Sharing,” a cutting-edge topic within the realm of software engineering and system design. His work aims to address significant challenges in the management and sharing of livestock data through the development of innovative microservice-based frameworks. By leveraging advanced technologies, Mahir seeks to improve data processing efficiency and scalability for agricultural applications. His research includes creating a comprehensive Livestock Event Information (LEI) schema for recording livestock events, developing the LEI2JSON (Livestock Event Information to JSON) tool for generating messages, and establishing the Livestock Event Information Sharing Architecture (LEISA) for robust data sharing. The project has made a significant impact, with its concepts being implemented in several commercial applications launched by the industry partner, TerraCipher. These advancements promise to offer practical solutions for the livestock industry, enhancing data accuracy, availability, and system reliability. These advancements promise to offer practical solutions for the livestock industry, enhancing data standardisation, availability, and system reliability.

Mahir’s research is supervised by a distinguished team, including his principal supervisor, Associate Professor Ashad Kabir, and his co-supervisor, Professor Lihong Zheng. Additionally, his project is funded by the Food Agility CRC in partnership with TerraCipher.

Reflecting on his PhD journey, Mahir remarked: “While the technical achievements of my research are incredibly fulfilling, I owe a significant part of my success to the exceptional support and mentorship I received from my principal supervisor Associate Professor Ashad Kabir. His dedication to my development went far beyond traditional supervision. Whether it was spending long hours in discussions, supporting me mentally during challenging times, or addressing my shortcomings with patience, A/Prof. Kabir has been a pillar of strength and inspiration. He has continually motivated me to overcome obstacles and upskill myself, which has been crucial in reaching milestones such as the 3MT finalist honour.”

He further added:

I also want to acknowledge the invaluable support from the Gulbali Institute, whose stipend fund has been instrumental in allowing me to focus on my research without financial strain. Their resources and encouragement have played a critical role in the success of my research and my personal growth as a scholar.”

Mahir’s selection as a finalist in the 3MT competition is a testament to his exceptional ability to communicate complex research topics in a clear and engaging manner. The 3MT competition challenges participants to present their research in just three minutes, requiring a balance of technical depth and public accessibility. Mahir’s success in this competition reflects his skill in making sophisticated concepts understandable and engaging for a diverse audience.

As he prepares for the 3MT finals, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mahir Habib for his outstanding achievements and wish him the very best in showcasing his groundbreaking research.
